Here is the Granny Christmas tree skirt.

I made this skirt because I always loved this pattern. I call it Grannys Christmas Tree skirt because of a special blanket my fathers grandmother(Granny) had made for my parents wedding. It is not the same colors but that isย definitelyย the same pattern. I remember cuddling up to that warm and colorful blanket just admiring the intricate looking pattern and hoping one day I would learn to make it myself. Fast forward a few years (ok maybe 15 years or more lol) and I am trying to find a pattern for a christmas tree skirt. Nothing I found in my searches really had the right look to me. So I started digging thru my crochet books thinking maybe I would write my own pattern. As I am going thru my tenth book i come across this pattern. That was it I knew what kind of tree skirt I was gonna make. I hope granny is looking down on the skirt with pride now that I have learned to do it. ๐Ÿ™‚

How to unply yarn

Ok so there isn’t very many resources out there that describe how to unply yarn. So I decided to dive in and share my learning with my fellow crocheters and knitters. I started by splitting the four ply yarn I had in to two two ply strands. I taped the ends of each to by lovely number two pencils and twisting the two ply strands around them.

Now for the hard part, the unplying. In reading about plying usually the yarn is plyed either in a clockwise or counter clockwise direction. I figured out how this one was plyed by twisting it in both directions seeing which way made the yarn untwist. The yarn I’m using was plyed in a clockwise fashion so I will unply it by turning the yarn in a counter clock direction.

I have a small section that I cut of from the main ball if yarn in case this ruins my yarn. One thing I have noticed while unplying the yarn is that the yarn that is waiting to be unplyed gets very twisted up. I’m not sure yet how to fix that other then letting the yarn untwist itself every once in awhile.

So that’s what I have learned so far I will keep y’all updated on how it goes! ๐Ÿ™‚

Unplying a yarn

20121129-114853.jpg

Ok so I’m still working on the photo blanket and have restarted it for the fourth time. Why you ask well its simple, the green yarn I bought is too thick and is making the blanket lay in a very weird way. So I sat staring at the yarn trying to decide how to solve my problem. My pervious attempt to fix the problem with a much smaller hook just didn’t work. Then I remembered the stuff I have learned about spinning yarn. Most yarn is plyed. So I took apart the first bits of the yarn and saw that it is a 4 ply yarn meaning four pieces of thread were twisted together to make one thicker piece of yarn. I decided that if I unplyed the yarn I could heather it with the brown it was supposed to be next to and maybe it would give the effect I was looking for. My problem is its gonna take forever to unply the yarn without a spinning wheel. I would think the unplying with the wheel should take maybe 30 minutes to an hour (maybe longer if I confuse myself lol) but by hand it will take hours to unply all of the ball. So wish me luck and patients I’m taking on this little ball if green yarn and hopefully it will be work the fight. ๐Ÿ™‚

Hey guys. I know I havnt been posting at all lately. Been super busy. It should be getting better though. Today I’m sharing an idea on how to take your color pencils with you without ruining or breaking them. If your an artist like I am then you have more then likely spent a precious amount of money on your pencils. I can’t afford a pencil travel case yet so I decided that I would pack them in one of my canning jars. Only thing is I couldn’t put the top on super tight because of the length of the pencils. But I think it should keep them safe on our travels. ๐Ÿ™‚ hope everyone out there has a great holiday!
